Dungeons and Dragons for Kids

I think it’s safe to argue that Dungeons and Dragons is good for kids in quite a few ways. Getting them away from a screen is obviously huge with so many kids (mine included) glued to some sort of screen. Also, I believe it really does teach some sense of empathy, as my daughter is constantly trying to befriend every creature that she comes across, often leading our adevntures to become more of a travelling zoo than blood soaked trail (which is really fun!).

There are many other aspects to DnD as well that I’d assume are good for kids as well, social, math, reading… But I digress. Let’s get to some adventures that are more kid friendly.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to get my daughter into DnD. She’s extremely creative, and we practice telling stories ocassionaly instead of reading books at bed time which is generally really fun. I’ve been looking for DnD Adventures geared towards a younger audience and foundthe adventures below.

At first I started with Lost Mines of Phandelver, but that didn’t turn out as good as I hoped despite my planning, my daughter was only 6 or 7 at the time, and it just ended up being too much for her, even making things simpler as we went. I struck out looking for some other materials that would be good for kids and came across the two really basic (as far as rules go, the stories are good!) adventures that my daughter absolutely loved.

Official Wizards Stuff

Heroes of Hesiod was the first adventure we ever played together, this is for really young kids, as it’s more of a board game than a DnD module in my opinion, which is really great for getting kids started. There are two in this series, Champions of the Elements, and we went through both in one “session” they only took us about 45 minutes to an hour each. Susan J Morris has some material for continuing in this simplified system you could check out though.

While not free, there are also the Young Adventurers guides that are slightly more advanced, also really good, and I believe Wizard’s first real forray into books for kids. They’re easy to read, bright colorful pictures, all the normal hallmarks of a YA book. They’re great, my daughter loves them.

DMs Guild - Just getting started adventures

Although not official Wizards, these are in the same category as Monster Slayers, as they’re very simplified rulesets, too simple for older kids.

Unplayed/Tested Modules

Below are some links to some PDFs that I pulled from a Facebook group that belonged (Belongs?) to Cameron Wright, with some of these adventures belonging to others. I don’t know if they’re still creating new content there, it seemed kind of dead unfortunately, and looking through Cameron’s patreon, it doesn’t seem to be active any more either unfortunately. I haven’t looked at these too much, but as I do, I’ll create new posts around them.

The folks over at https://ttrpgkids.com put together a pretty extensive list (over 180 items) of other modules that are other game systems, d6, d20, cards, etc. Everything on this page uses the D20 System, but for anyone that might be interested you can fidn the list here. This appears to be mostly paid or pay what you want content.

As a final note, I don’t get paid for any links here, most of the PDFs are hosted on my own dime, and for those that aren’t, I’m not getting anything for them. If you’re the owner, and you don’t want it here for any reason please let me know.

Enjoy!
